Writing a great CV isn't rocket science, but there are some tips and strategies you can use to help your CV shine - here are our top ten.
  1. Clarity. Be clear in both the layout of your CV and the content; don't waffle.
  2. Focus. Tailor your CV to the job you are applying for and be very focused on the selection criteria or job description.
  3. Relevance. Find a way to minimise distracting information - does your potential employer really need to know you walked dogs when you were 18?
  4. Easy. Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to correlate back to the job description or selection criteria. The people who read your CV are busy and they'll appreciate it if you make their lives a little easier.
  5. Correct. Make sure spelling and grammar are correct. Make sure your contact details are correct.
  6. Direct. No longer than 3-4 pages if you are more experienced, 1-2 pages if you are new in the workforce.
  7. Key strengths. Include these at the top of your CV.
  8. Career profile or objective. Decide which best suits you and include it at the top.
  9. Referees. Ensure that you have a recent employer or superior as a referee and that you've asked them.
  10. Tailored. Your CV should be tailored to each job you apply for.
